You may regard him as a young and budding talent but there is no denying that Awal Ashaari is well on his way to solidifying his position in this industry. He aims to be Malaysia’s number one television host and icon.
It is hard to miss the 29-year-old today as he hosts many television programmes on various channels. He landed his first career on television as a newsreader for 8TV before participating in the FCUK Model Search competition and ended up winning it. This was followed by an offer to host an infotainment programme on Astro entitled ‘Beat TV’ in 2005. That same year, he was voted CLEO’s Most Eligible Bachelor by the magazine’s readers.
A versatile talent, Awal instantly caught the attention of the public with his excellent performance, great on-stage presence and charisma, garnering positive reviews from media and public alike. He was later offered to host ‘One In A Million’ on 8TV. Since then, his career has been on a roll and he has hosted numerous events and functions including ‘live’ television programmes.
Awal was also given the opportunity to hone his acting skills in nine feature films, including Niyang Rapik, Syurga Cinta and Impak Maksima which were box-office hits with a collection above RM3.5 million each. He has also acted in a number of telemovies and dramas. His last drama was a collaboration between Malaysia and Philippines entitled A Time For Us where he acted alongside Asian stars Jericho Rosales and Christine Reyes. It was aired in Malaysia, the Philippines, America and Japan, and recently had won the Best TV Series Award in the Philippines. It also earned a nomination for Best TV Series Award at the International Emmy Awards held in Hollywood in November 2009. Last August, he was nominated for the Best Actor Award at the 22nd Malaysian Film Festival for his outstanding performance in Syurga Cinta.
Awal’s latest stint is to become a recording artiste and had signed a recording contract with Alibi Music Group. His first single entitled “Memori” which was composed by Lah Ahmad was released in October and is now being played in all the radio stations.
His attraction to the masses lies in his appealing personality and natural flare on and off camera. He is also somewhat known as a trendsetter and fashion icon with his distinctive spiky hair that became his trademark. Fans were also spotted styling the same hairdo. His distinct style distinguishes him apart from his peers and eventually landed him his own fashion programme called ‘W’ that was aired on TV3. Thus making Awal the first male artiste in Malaysia hosting a fashion programme.
Spreading his ventures into business, Awalicious Life & Style is a private company owned by him which focuses on fashion, retail and lifestyle business.
Exploiting his status as a role model to youth, Awal has recently collaborated with Jabatan Tenaga Kerja (under the Ministry of Human Resource) to give motivational talks to primary and secondary school students around Malaysia. This has been his latest ongoing passion and small contribution for the nation.
We hope to see more of Awal in years to come.
